The Cats have so far split the first two
games of a three game week and looked forward to defeating the first place
Spartans who beat them when Rockbridge went to Salem in the first
half of the season. Scott Branch took the mound for the Cats. Salem managed to bring home 2 runs in the top of the first inning when an error by Joe Vita put a runner on first and the following two batters singled. With 2 out, another batter singled to put Salem ahead up by 2 runs. Will Herndon, having an impressive second half behind the plate and with the bat, threw a runner out going to 3rd base to end the top of the inning. Nick Ramsey led off the bottom of the first for Rockbridge with a walk and was followed by Brandon Zollman who singled to center. Branch chopped a grounder to 3B and Ramsey scored as Branch was safe on a bad throw to 1B. Senior Adam Sandridge, who would go on to have the night of his RCHS baseball career (so far, at least), singled to center to drive in another run and tie up the game. Jonathan Wilson followed with another single to center which drove in Josh Kibler, pinch runner for Branch. Herndon got on base on an error by the short stop and Joe Vita came up with one out and the bases loaded. Vita grounded to short and was safe on a bad throw to 1B. Two more runs scored giving the Cats the lead by 3 runs. Branch faced 3 batters in the top of the 2nd inning without giving up a hit or a run. With the top of the order coming up in the top of the 2nd inning, Nick Ramsey was hit by a pitch and both Adrian Watts and Branch walked to load the bases. Sandridge then drove a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence to record a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN and put the score out of reach at 9-2. The Spartans threatened again in the third when pitcher, Davidson, recorded a three run homer to make the score 9-5. After giving up another run on a double and single to the next 2 batters, Branch was relieved by Josh Kibler who retired the side. Score 9-6. The Cats came up empty on the bottom of the 3rd as did the Spartans in the top of the 4th. Rockbridge added 3 more runs in the top of the 4th inning. Sandridge singled, Wilson got on base on an error and Herndon singled to drive in Ren Scott who came in to run for Sandridge and got into scoring position by stealing second base. Kevn Burant came in to run for Herndon. Kibler then singled to bring in Wilson. Finley Waddell got up with runners on 1st and 3rd bases. Chris Thompson came in to pinch run for Kibler. The second pitch to Waddell was wild and Salem's catcher threw wild to 3B in an attempt to get Burant who then scored. The catcher was thrown out of the game by the umpire after making a few choice comments to Burant who collided with him at the plate. Kibler was relieved by Wilson on the mound after walked 2 batters in the top of the 5th. Joe Vita came back into the game to play 2B and Branch moved to SS. Wilson struck out his first batter, gave up a single to load the bases and walked the next batter to bring in a run. He then struck out the following batter to end the inning. Score 12-7. The Cats managed another run in the bottom of the 5th when Zollman got on base on an error and stole 2B and 3B on the 1st two pitches to the next batter. Branch got him in on a sac fly to right field. Score 13-8. Wilson started off the top of the 6th by giving up a leadoff single and a walk. The next batter hit a hard shot to Waddell at 3rd who stepped on the bag for the first out and threw to Sandridge at 1B to record a double play. The next batter got on base on an error thru SS but Wilson struck out the last batter of the inning to end the game which was called due to darkness. This game proved not only to be a BIG win for the Wildcats but also proved be a BIG confidence builder. They showed how they can win by using the superior pitching, fielding and hitting that all of their fans expected from them this year. The wise use of the pitching staff by Coach Lollis was also a BIG factor. No pitcher was left in too long so as to cause any lasting damage. Sure, they made some errors but none that cost them the game. They came up with big plays and big hits when needed. They played like a TEAM and showed team spirit more than ever before in this season. RCHS has now won 4 of their last 5 games and has 4 more games to go before tournament time. They know they can go all the way - no question about it. GO CATS! |
