Wildcats (2-5) continued their winning ways by traveling to Northside and
defeating the Vikings (1-6) in a game that was closer than the score
indicates. Once again their pitching and defense held up and their hitting came through as they reaped their 2nd District victory in a row at the half season mark. Josh Kibler got his 2nd win on the mound and put in another very good outing as he started for Rockbridge. Neither run scored against his team was earned and he collected 8 strikeouts while giving up only 6 hits across 5 innings. After giving up a leadoff double in the top of the 6th, Kibler was replaced on the mound by Joe Vita. This proved to be a gutsy but rewarding move by head coach Rick Lollis since Vita had only pitched one prior inning early in the season. With none out and the tying run on second base, Vita retired the side and came out in the bottom of the 7th inning to do the same. The offense came early as the Cats took the lead in the top of the 1st inning on Nick Ramsey's leadoff double followed his steal of 3B and Brandon Zollman's sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Vikings put one up on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning as they scored on a double that drove in a runner who reached base on an error. With the score tied at 1-1, they took the lead in the bottom of the 5th when another batter reached base on the Cats' 2nd error of the game. This was followed by a wild throw to 2B as the runner attempted to steal and his advance to 3B. He then scored on a hard single to left. The Cats tied the game in the top of the 6th when Will Herndon walked in a run and Casey Saunders' bunt attempt brought home Jonathan Wilson from 3rd base to retake the lead. Rockbridge scored 4 more runs in the to of the 7th as Northside became unglued by giving up hits to Scott Branch (1B), Jonathan Wilson (2B), Will Herndon (1B) and Finley Waddell (1B) and committing several errors. Branch went 2 for 3 with a walk while Ramsey went 2 for 4 in the game. Herndon and Wilson each had 2 RBI's for the Cats. Herndon, who threw a runner out going to 2B, caught a popup at the backstop and blocked a number of balls thrown in the dirt, had his best game of the season behind the plate. Vita (30 pitches) got the save which was the first of the year for a Wildcat pitcher. Kibler (90 pitches) recorded his 2nd win against 2 losses.
