This game represented the Cats' big chance to beat the Terriers for the
first this season and the last time before changing districts next year. They also
had the opportunity to pull ahead of them for the first time in the Blue Ridge District
standings. While they played tough and the game was close, they just couldn't pull
it off. Josh Kibler got the start and Byrd got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. They added another in the second on a sac fly to Nick Ramsey in left which scored a runner from 3B. The score stayed at 2-0 until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Cats came alive. Scott Branch got on base on an error and Jonathan Wilson drew a walk. Will Herndon, who has been hitting the ball with authority in the past few games, bounced one over 2B and drove Branch home. Kibler then delivered a single up the middle to bring two more runs in and the Cats had the lead 3-2. While it seemed that Kibler didn't have his good stuff early in the game, he actually toughed it out and got stronger as the game went on. He held the Terriers down until they came up with another run in the 6th inning. With 2 out, Byrd got a runner on base on a bobbled ball hit to short. A double by the following batter drove in the tying run. The Cats scored a run in the bottom of the 6th when Kibler singled to drive in Herndon who led off the inning with a double to right field. Byrd re-took the lead in the top of the 7th when a single started their half of the inning. The runner was moved to 2B on a forceout bunt by the next batter. Another single brought in the tying run. Wilson was then brought in to pitch. A throwing error in the field caused the go ahead run to cross the plate. With 2 out in the bottom of the last inning and the score 5-4, Adam Sandridge doubled to the gap in right center. The inning and the game ended as Jonathan Wilson flied out to right. Kibler played a great game. He threw a gritty game (121 pitches) and gave up seven scattered hits and only 3 earned runs. Offensively he collected 2 hits while driving in 3 of the Cats' 4 runs. |
