| The
score didn't tell the whole story as the Wildcats suffered their first
loss of the season to their old foes, William Byrd High School. From one perspective, all it took to loose were just 3 pitches and a called balk. Byrd scored all of their runs on three homerun balls given up by Rockbridge Ace, Adam Sandridge, who only gave up three more hits in the five and one-third innings he pitched. Adam struck out 3 batters, walked only 2 and made a total of 94 pitches. Josh Kibler came in to finish the game in the bottom of the 6th with one out and runners on 1st and 3rd bases. The home plate umpire called a balk on Josh before he delivered his first pitch which accounted for the last run for Byrd. Defensively, the Cats gave Adam another stellar performance in the field by converting all 12 opportunities for putouts. Finley Waddell had four assists at 3B while Jonathan Wilson had one at SS, Scott Branch had one plus two putouts at 2B and Watts, Zollman, Kibler and Sandridge each contributed. Casey Saunders was kept busy at 1B and did a great job handling the throws from the rest of the infield. Rockbridge had four hits including another triple delivered by Brandon Zollman, which scored the Cat's only run, as well as a bunt single by Nick Ramsey, and singles by Waddell and Watts. Byrd's starting pitcher, Aaron Yost went the distance and recorded 9 strikeouts in the process.
