The Wildcats went to Blacksburg to play the Indians in the first of three scheduled District games this week.
Brandon Zollman took the mound for the Cats who managed to keep Blacksburg scoreless in the bottom of the first inning with one of the year's best plays in the field.  With 2 out and a runner on 1B, an Indian batter drove a single to short RF.  Adrian Watts threw to cutoff man  Adam Sandridge who then threw a perfect strike to Will Herndon at home to nail the runner trying to score from 1B.
Rockbridge put 2 runs on the board in the top of the 2nd when Herndon drove in Sandridge and Jonathan Wilson with a double to the gap in right. That was the only time in the game that the Cats had the lead as Blacksburg came back to score 8 runs of their own in the bottom of the second.  Zollman was relieved by Joe Vita after giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.  He allowed 5 runs all together.  Vita, who hadn't warmed up, only pitched to 4 batters and gave up 2 runs of his own on 3 singles and a walk.  Two uncharacteristic errors by Wildcat outfielders permitted runners to advance.  Scott Branch, having a very good season so far on the mound, was brought in to stop the bleeding and got the Cats out of the inning by retiring the next 2 batters.
The Cats threatened in the top of the 4th when Herndon walked, Finley Waddell got on base on an error and Nick Ramsey walked with one out.  Chris Thompson, running for Herndon, got picked off taking a long lead off 3rd and Ramsey got thrown out trying to steal 2nd base.
They managed to get 2 more runs in the 5th When Sandridge drove in Zollman and Justin Strowbridge, who got on base via a walk and single respectively.  Rockbridge appeared to be building up some momentum when the game was called during the bottom of the 5th with the score 9-4 as lightening and rain were threatening.
The Cats were not sharp at all today.  Maybe it was due, in part, to the 2 hour ride from Lexington on that hot school bus.
