| The Cats (3-4-1, 0-4) went to Covington with hopes of defeating the previously
unbeaten Mountaineers (7-0,5-0) and collecting their first District win of the year. They got off to a great start with Jonathan Wilson putting a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield wall in the top of the 1st inning to put them ahead for the first time in District play. They collected 4 more runs in the top of the 3rd when Adrian Watts drove in Brandon Zollman with a single and Wilson singled to center to score Scott Branch and Watts. Will Herndon followed with a single to score Wilson and the Cats were up 5-0. Allegheny got their first two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning after Cats' starter, Wilson, gave up a walk and a single. A ground ball then scored the runner on 2nd base. The second run scored when Wilson ( 64 pitches) walked the next three batters. He was relieved by Brandon Zollman who got the next batter to fly out to Nick Ramsey in left field. Rockbridge came back to score 5 runs in the top of the 4th when Watts' single drove in Ramsey and Zollman who singled and walked respectively. Adam Sandridge got on base when his shot to center was dropped by the centerfielder. Wilson then delivered his second homer of the night over the centerfield wall to bring home 3 runs. Ahead 10-2 at this point, the Cats gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th when Zollman gave up a 3 run homerun to Derek Cantrell. The score is now 10-5. Rockbridge added another run in the top of the 5th when Watts, who got three run scoring singles for the night, drove in Zollman who got on by singling to left. Zollman would eventually go 4 for 4 with 3 singles and a double. With the score now 11-5, the Mountaineers picked up another run after Zollman (56 pitches) gave up two singles. He was relieved by Adam Sandridge who struck out the next batter to end the inning. The Cats went down one-two-three in the 6th while Allegheny picked up another run in the bottom of the inning as a passed ball caused a runner on 3B to score. With the score 11-8, the Cats again failed to score in the 7th though they had loaded bases and one out. With two men on base, Scott Branch delivered a single up the middle but the runner on second didn't score as the throw from right field went to the backstop. After Sandridge (38 pitches) gave up a leadoff single followed by a double to right, he was relieved by Josh Kibler who walked the next batter to load the bases. Nick Lomasney then drove a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield wall to record a grand slam and cinch the Allegheny win by one run. On the plus side, Wilson stood out as he drove in
5 runs with two home runs and only gave up 2 runs on the mound. |
